“ECCE contains 67,633 entries: 29,670 in the English-Chinese section, 37,963 in the Chinese-English section. The latter is an abridgment of the massive ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary, with improvements such as more example sentences, the inclusion of both pinyin and characters for all sentences, and indications of vocabulary grade levels to help learners prioritize their studies by indicating the most basic and important entries.” © 2011 University of Hawai`i Press
Wenlin 4.0 incorporates this new grade level system, which is a really helpful study tool. Grade {A} through {D} are all words of the traditional HSK Chinese proficiency test.
“The notation {E} indicates words (Chinese or English) that were chosen for inclusion in the portable book edition of the ABC English-Chinese/Chinese-English Dictionary, although they were not in grades {A} through {D}. (All words in grades {A} through {D} are also included in that book.) The notation {F} indicates some words that were considered for inclusion in the same book, but were excluded in order to keep the book from becoming too large.” (Wenlin)
